AB OBJECTIVE: We investigated the medical records and laboratory findings
to find which parameters might be characteristic for the HIV disease
progression. MATERIALS & METHODS: We compared the data of 30 patients
with HIV infection (20 hemophiliacs and 10 pts with sexual contact; 28
males and 2 females; 36.4 +/- 10.9 years of age; 47,841 total
observation days; 8 ACs, 9 early ARCs, 6 late ARCs and 7 AIDSs as final
stage) and those of 31 seronegative pts (30 male hemophiliacs and one
female with von Willebrand disease; 40.3 +/- 15.4 years of age; 41,703
days) as control. RESULTS: Analysis of the calculated 442 records
confirmed the strong correlationships (p < 0.001) between the clinical
stage and CD4+cell count, CD20+ cell count, CD16+ cell count, mitogenic
response to PWM, beta 2 microglobulin and serum IgA, respectively. On
the other hand, cell count of CD8+ and HLA-DR+ and CD57+ were
significantly co-elevated at the midst of the disease course. The serum
immunoglobulin levels increased in the different manners by the class
and stage; IgM in the AC, IgG in the early ARC and IgA in the far more
advanced stage. DISCUSSION & CONCLUSIONS: In the early ARC, the
immunological fight against the enhanced viral replication is prominent.
So the anti-retroviral therapy should be initiated no later than this
stage.
